To qualify for a Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County home, families must meet income guidelines, demonstrate a genuine need for safe and affordable housing, and be willing to partner with Habitat through education, financial preparation, and "sweat equity." Applicants must be ready to actively partner with Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County and it's volunteers while in the Homeownership Program.
Understanding the Eligibility Requirements
Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County, located in Wooster, OH, works with families who are ready for safe, stable, and affordable housing but cannot obtain a traditional mortgage. To be considered for the Homeownership Program, applicants must meet three core requirements:
- Income Eligibility: Habitat homes are not free gifts—they are sold with a 0% interest mortgage. Applicants must have a steady income that falls within specific income ranges based on household size.
- Demonstrated Need: Families must show a clear need for improved housing. This may include overcrowding, unsafe or unhealthy living conditions, unaffordable rent, or temporary/unstable housing situations.
- Willingness to Partner: Accepted families partner with Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County throughout the entire process by participating in financial and homeowner education classes and investing required "sweat equity" hours in their home and the homes of other partner families.
What Sweat Equity Means
"Sweat equity" is a cornerstone of the Habitat mission. It is an investment of time and effort, working alongside volunteers and staff, to build homes, community, and hope for the future. Sweat equity hours may include:
- Helping build your own Habitat home or another Habitat home
- Volunteering at our Habitat Offices or ReStore
- Participating in homeowner education and financial classes
- Attending meetings and checkāins with Habitat staff
This hands-on involvement builds skills, strengthens confidence, and helps families take ownership of their future homes from the beginning.
The Waitlist & Application Process
Due to overwhelming interest in our program, we are unable to accept applications at this time. We are able to add you to our Wait List. Please call our offices for additional information and to be added to the list.
Once a family does receive an application and returns it with required documentation, the application will be reviewed by staff and committees to see if the basic Habitat homeowner requirements are met. If the basic requirements are met, a home visit will be scheduled. Final determination of acceptance into the program will be made by our Board of Directors.
If Your Application Is Approved
You will be required to sign a “letter of agreement” and complete partnership requirements. These requirements include, but may not be limited to;
- Saving for the down payment, 1st year’s property taxes, and insurance.
- Successfully completing Habitat approved financial and homeowner education programs.
- Completing a minimum of 6 hours of sweat equity every month at a Habitat site per adult household member. A minimum of 300 hours of sweat equity, per adult, is required to be completed before purchasing your home.
