A Clear, Affordable Way to Own a Home
How Our Program Helps You Move Forward
Finding a home you can truly afford can feel out of reach, especially when rent keeps rising and traditional mortgages aren’t an option. We partner with families to build and buy homes with affordable, no-interest mortgages designed around real income. At Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County, Inc., we work alongside you every step of the way; from application through the purchase process. Together, we create a path to stability that lasts.
We partner with individuals and families who are ready to build a stable future - those with steady income, responsible credit, and a need for safe, adequate housing. Applicants typically fall within defined income ranges based on household size and are currently living in overcrowded, substandard, or unsuitable conditions. We require each partner family to commit to the process by completing monthly sweat equity hours, contributing at least 300 hours per adult as they help build their home and others. Together, this shared effort creates a strong foundation for long-term homeownership and stability.

Common Questions About Homeownership
What to Know Before You Get Started
What is Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County?
We are a nonprofit, Christian housing ministry serving Wayne County families through partnership and community support. We build homes at reduced cost for families with limited incomes who are willing to contribute their own sweat equity. Homes are then purchased with no-interest mortgages, making long-term homeownership more accessible. Together, we create a path to stability through shared effort and commitment.
Who qualifies for Habitat housing?
We partner with families who have stable income, a responsible credit history, and a need for better housing due to overcrowded or inadequate living conditions. Applicants must fall within income guidelines based on household size and be willing to contribute at least 300 hours of sweat equity per adult, including a minimum of 6½ hours per month. This shared commitment ensures that every home is earned through partnership, not given. It’s a process built to support long-term success and stability.
How do I apply for the program?
Due to high demand, we are not currently accepting new applications. However, you can call 330-263-1713 to be placed on the application wait list. While on the wait list, you’ll need to make monthly call-ins to confirm your continued interest. During this time, we also encourage you to improve your credit by resolving any past-due accounts or collections, as this will strengthen your application.
What happens after I submit an application?
Once submitted, your application is reviewed to determine if it meets basic program requirements. If it does, members of our Selection Committee will schedule one or two home visits and submit their findings to the Board of Directors for approval. If selected, you’ll sign an agreement and be paired with a Family Advocate who will guide you through the remaining steps. This process ensures you feel supported and prepared throughout your journey.
What are the requirements before moving into a home?
Before purchasing your home, you’ll complete several important steps: saving for a down payment, attending financial and homeownership education classes, and completing your required sweat equity hours. These steps are designed to prepare you for long-term success as a homeowner. Once complete, you’ll be eligible to purchase your home and begin your next chapter. We stay with you through each step so you’re never navigating it alone.
What will my mortgage and payments look like?
Homes are sold with no-interest mortgages, keeping payments affordable and predictable. Monthly payments are typically around 25% of your income and include mortgage, property taxes, and homeowner’s insurance. This structure helps ensure your home remains financially sustainable over time. It’s designed to create stability, not strain.
How long does the process take?
From application to move-in, the process typically takes two to three years. While that may feel like a long time, each step is designed to set you up for long-term success as a homeowner. Throughout the process, we work alongside you so you always know what to expect. It’s a journey we take together.
Is Habitat for Humanity open to everyone?
Yes. Habitat for Humanity follows a non-discriminatory policy, and neither race nor religion is a factor in family selection. We focus on partnership, need, and readiness to complete the program requirements. Our goal is to make homeownership accessible to families across Wayne County. Everyone deserves the opportunity to build a better future.
